We are an organization in Athens that gets involved in our community. The main goal of League of Women Voters of Athens County is to create a sense of community in the neighborhoods where people live and work. We hope that an increased sense of community will lead to more personal involvement and more cultural, educational and social activities, which will create a better community and a better place for us to live. We are an unbiased, issue-oriented organization committed to registering people to vote and to inform voters about candidates and issues.
The core mission of the League of Women Voters of Athens County (LWVAC) is to provide local voter services. We prepare a Voter Guide, published by The Messenger and distributed to various locations around the county, as well as appearing online at our website. The LWVAC also sponsors candidate forums and town hall meetings to give voters the opportunity to learn about the candidates and the issue that would appear on the ballot. The focus of LWVAC includes concerns of local impact, as well as issues designated by LWV Ohio and LWVUS, with the goal of sharing information with the public in order to promote informed voting.
One of the most important committees–probably the most important–is Voter Services. This committee encourages and is actively involved in registering new voters and providing information to voters to help them makee educated and informed decisions for voting. League–through this committee–provides unbiased and impartial information about candidates and issues. This committee also sponsors public voter forums where candidates meet to share their thoughts about the issues of concern to voters in their constituency.
The Nominating Committee does just that: proposes nominees for offices and board at each annual meeting.
League is always in search of new members–women and men–to strengthen the organization. Come help this committee work to provide new members and new leadership.
This committee plans the programs for public and for League members for the year and suggests recommendation to the Board.
Whenever League plans or does something newsworthy, this is the committee that puts the activity before the public eye.
