This weekend the League of Women Voters of Athens County (LWVAC) celebrated its 75th anniversary with a party at Athens Uncorked. The event honored League Lifetime
Members, the Athens County Board of Elections, past Wiseman Award winners and the local League. LWVAC also announced their next community program: a presentation and small group discussion on
bridging the partisan divide with presenter George Banzinger from Braver Angels on Wednesday, April 23 at 6:30 pm in the Athens Community Center.
Three members, Carol Beale, Lois Whaley and Jane Woodrow, were honored for their lifetime membership - each with more than 50 years as League members! They shared reminisces of their experiences in LWVAC, noting how the League has changed and adapted to fit current members and society.
LWVAC presented an award of recognition for the Athens County Board of Elections. Aundrea Carpenter-Colvin, BOE Chair, accepted on behalf of the board and staff. The recognition honored the Board of Elections and staff for their exemplary oversight of Athens County elections giving voters confidence that our elections are fair, impartial and accurate; its firm commitment to voter education, rights, and access; and its longstanding cooperation with the League.
The League recognized the attending Wiseman Award winners Marty Zinn (2008), Andrea Reik (2014) and Lee Branner (2017). The League gives the Wiseman Award each year to a non-League member who demonstrates deep community concern related to mental health, children and/or community building.
Greta Suiter, Manuscripts Archivist for Ohio University Libraries, and intern Alexis Reynolds were in attendance with a few examples of LWVAC memorabilia from a sizable collection that has been recently reviewed and organized. They are currently preparing an exhibit showcasing the work of LWVAC; the exhibit will soon be accessible on the 5th floor of Alden Library in the Mahn Center.
Finally, the League was honored to receive recognition from the Athens County Commissioners noting its commitment to non-partisan voter education, its longstanding work in the Athens County community, and encouraging community support of its ongoing work.
